Yes, it is possible to do a math challenge in Gravity Forms, however it does use captcha to display the actual math problem so that it can't be defeated by a bot... which can perform calculations.

If you install and activate the Really Simple Captcha plugin from the WordPress.org repository (Login to your WordPress Dashboard, go to Add New Plugins and search for Really Simple Captcha) it will add additional options to the Captcha field in Gravity Forms.

Once installed and activated, add a Captcha field to your form, edit it and select the math challenge option from the field type drop down. You can then configure the colors that are used also.

Hi Carl et al,

I have a client who for some reason insists on using a field that makes people enter something like the sum of 2 + 2 rather than using recaptcha or Akismet. Do we have a way to do that?

Thanks,
Cynthia

It's really going to depend on the type of spam you are getting. Some spam is done by spam bots and is scripted. Other spam consists of actual people submitting forms by hand. It's typically easier to catch the bots than it is to catch human entered spam.

My company has been struggling with spam as of late, so my plan is to implement Gravity Forms with Akismet + recaptcha. This seems like a super combo to combat spam.

Is it possible or necessary to do both, and has anyone had success with this approach?
