Currently the author name can only be set to a pre-defined value OR use the name of the person who is logged in when they fill out the form. So it requires the user is logged in.

You can integrate both a registration form and a post creation form in one if you wanted to do this using the User Registration Add-On.

We are going to look into how we can handle this going forward. I've heard another plugin does this so we are going to look into how the author can be set to a user that doesn't exist.

I've setup a form to allow users to submit content. (anxiously awating for 1.6 that requires users to login) Meantime, I would like users to be able to input their user name in the post and pushed to wordpress. Any ideas on how ?
