The beauty of good design is function over form, especially when you are providing a service (one as good as this). It should appeal to as many people as possible and be as simple to use as possible. I loved the old design but I can see how it could be intimidating to some people. The header is doing exactly what it should do, nothing more, nothing less, why complicate things.
