I did figure out though that if I go to the notification settings page and click the insert form field rop down, it adds it to the form and displays the field id. I usually use the form preview since there is less theme cruft. In the 1.6 version which is currently in beta release, the field ID and type are displayed right in the form builder. It's pretty sweet.
