I have installed the expiry plugin, and a field for expriy date 1 year from join date, but for continuing users, your solution, "Update forms where if they pay, there are 2 options in the backend: if it's expired, expire date is set from now + month/year, if he is still active takes the expiration date and adds a month/year." Expire Users takes care of the role change at that set date.
