The issue is your site does not have enough available PHP memory allocated. You need to increase the available PHP memory. See this screenshot and look at the "Response" that the AJAX receives: http://grab.by/a9A1

It's not uncommon for web hosts to default to a very low amount of available PHP memory like 16MB. You need to increase this to 64MB or 128MB.

Here is a tutorial on how to do this, you may need your web host to assist you with it:

Thanks, I just removed/deleted the plugin twice. Reinstalling once using the zip file and once manually uploading with ftp. Still nothing.

When nothing happens after pressing a field button and I try to navigate away I get this pop-up:
"Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? You have unsaved changes."

Other things that may be relevant (?): This is a new installation of wordpress. I am running the site with the genesis framework. I was getting fatal error messages when trying to edit menus - this went away when I disabled gravity forms.

The installation process may not have completed properly. That happens occasionally. Try completely removing/deleting the plugin files then re-installing a fresh copy.

Just installed gravity forms. When I go to create a new form and try to add form elements, nothing happens, no errors, just nothing.... I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?
