The error is not related to gravity forms, no form plugins actually handle the sending of email notifications they let your server or smtp plugin deal with that. Have you tried contacting the plugin author for support via it's wordpess.org support page http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-smtp/

Sometimes errors like that can occur when you are trying to send mail without authenticating using your email address and password

You mention trying googles email, have you tested using a different email service?

Information regarding getting email notifcations to work can be found in the documentation here, http://www.gravityhelp.com/documentation/page/Troubleshooting_Notifications

Regards,

Getting this message - I have tried routing to Gmail and my Google Apps address.
I am using WP SMTP, followed directions seen on other websites.
This is extremely frustrating that it's not addressed more thouroughly on your website, and documented more thoroughly elsewhere.
Questioning my purchase at this point.
