Have you tried contacting the plugin author for support via it's wordpess.org support page <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-smtp/" rel="nofollow">http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-smtp/</a> Sometimes errors like that can occur when you are trying to send mail without authenticating using your email address and password You mention trying googles email, have you tested using a different email service? I am using WP SMTP, followed directions seen on other websites. This is extremely frustrating that it's not addressed more thouroughly on your website, and documented more thoroughly elsewhere.
