There is a lot to email reliability:
http://yoast.com/email-reliability/

You can try using the WP SMTP Mail plugin. That works more reliably in a lot of cases than the WordPress wp_mail function.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/

Part of the issue with sending from your server's mail program is that the server is not normally tied to your email address at all, and if you're on shared hosting, you have to worry about the reputation of the server, which is affected by mail sent by all other users of that server, spam or legitimate.
