Ah, I see -- setup their mail through another mail provider... so the Gmail et.al. would be fine... Gotcha now. I'll see if that is something their office is up for such things. Thanks!

You could use Gmail or another third party SMTP host and not have to deal with the limitations of Dreamhost.

I fail to see how that would route a proper auto-response to the inquirer who is using Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and the like.... ?

You could always use a SMTP service to send the e-mails. We list some SMTP plugins for WordPress on our Troubleshooting Notifications documentation. http://www.gravityhelp.com/documentation/page/Troubleshooting_Notifications

Dreamhost doesn't allow for free support, so we haven't gone the route of pay-to-talk yet, but here's the email support exchange between Dreamhost and the office manager:

Matt, Thanks for your reply. Do you have any suggestions? The reason we changed the form to using the Dreamhost account (MadWeb) as the sender was because Dreamhost's policy that does not allow yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, (etc) addresses. Are we stuck in a Dreamhost Catch-22? Thanks, Don

Unfortunately with auto-responders the auto-responder does not pay attention to the reply-to email address and will instead reply to the email address the original email came from. I could only suggest that you look into another way to get these emails to your recipients.

Here's what I found on their Wiki: http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Sender_Domain_Policy_and_Spoofing and how they are attempting to curb spoofing (though most of the crazy stuff I see is from some made-up domain rather than the big names!).

Any thoughts of a workaround are appreciated!

I'm not sure how to work around those restrictions on Dreamhost. Seems like some pretty interesting information. Is this from talking with their support, or are the documents that detail these policies accessible somewhere?

I have a head-scratcher -- at least for me:

On the form: http://www.madisonsquarechurch.org/contact-us/, the host (Dreamhost) has a policy against allowing the Reply-To address to be a big webmail provider (Gmail, Yahoo, and the like)! So, we attempted to bypass that issue by setting up a general mailbox (madweb@ ) as the Sender.

The issue then arises if someone needs to setup an auto-responder -- according to Dreamhost, the auto-responders on their system ignore the Reply-To field and respond only to the Sender -- which is a general mailbox. Thus, neither the *true* Sender nor the Recipient are alerted to the fact that the email went un-responded-to or that the response went to a generally unmonitored mailbox...

Any chance that made some semblance of sense? Any thoughts as to what the "fix" may be? I am nearly ready to draw up a flow chart to comprehend it all myself. :-/ Let me know what needs to be explained (or at least attempted).

Thanks in advance,
