Gravity Forms MySQL requirement

Is the MySQL 5.x requirement a hard requirement or jsut a strong recommendation? My hosting provider (Yahoo) is running on MySQL 4.1.14 and will not be upgrading this year.

I posted this before, but I could not reach the thread (permissions) once I was notified of a response...maybe it ended up in the wrong forum although I was pretty sure I hade gone to the pre-sales forum.

  2. Gravity Forms may or may not work with MySQL 4.. it just depends on what functionality you're using. The thing is, we just don't support it. MySQL 5 has been out for a long time now and there's no reason for any good hosting company not to at least offer it as an option if you need it.

Another thing of note, WordPress itself has officially ended support for it so you may run into other issues with the WordPress core if your host doesn't upgrade soon.

    Cool, thanks.

I have become aware via several avenues (including their own support team) that Yahoo is not a great solution, but I'm launching my website in 2 weeks in support of a 7500 mile roadtrip and it's a little late to switch now :). Ironically, I ditched Ruby on Rails for this effort because they did not support MySQL versions more recent than 5.0 ;). But I just found out about the Yahoo issue. My fault for assuming Yahoo would keep up with current releases. When I get back I will probably switch hosting providers. I am open to suggestions for good ones...

Meanwhile, I guess I could buy the developer version of Gravity Forms and just see how it goes. I would rather do that in my limited time available than try to do it all with Contact Forms 7 and then find out they can't do what I need and be stuck. Does that sound realistic?

  4. Sure. I've seen several normal contact forms that do work on MySQL 4 servers but again, can't swear that all of the advanced features will work properly or not. Since we don't support it, we really don't test in that environment so I'm sorry that I can't be more specific about what may or may not work.

I agree that Yahoo probably isn't the best, but they're like 100 steps better than GoDaddy for hosting. If you're looking for a good, inexpensive hosting provider for later, you might try Bluehost, Dreamhost or Hostgator. I think all of those are decent from the price point and provide the proper hosting environment to support WordPress/Gravity Forms moving forward.

Ok, cool...Bluehost has popped up before so I'll probably look there first when the time comes.

Thanks for helping me out :).

  6. Sure. Glad I could help. I have a few sites personally hosted on Bluehost and they're great for sites with an average amount of traffic. The pricing is good too. If you're going to have a site with a really huge amount of traffic, they only have one plan though so not too scalable there.. still, fine for most sites.
