Multi-site Network

Hello, I see there is a thread for "how to install in multisite," but it is blocked to prospective customers.

Before I purchase, I would like to know which license i would need for a multi-site blog running multiple domains, any special installation instructions for multi-site, and any other information I might need to have before committing.

    Thanks!

  2. You would need a license for each site in your multi-site network. So either a multi-site license or a Developer License depending on how many sites you will have. The way multi-site works in WordPress is each site has it's own database tables and plugin/theme setup. So each site has to have the license key populated, has it's own forms, it's own database tables, etc.

You install in multisite just like you do in non-multisite. The only multi-site specific options available is code you can add to your wp-config.php file to prepopulate the license key, and even pre-generate forms when a new site is created using the multi-site tools.

  3. The Developer license works for Wordpress 3.0 in a multisite installation. I know from my experience that it works for subfolders. I haven't tried it with subdomains yet. I don't see any problem using it that way.

Using Multisite with subfolders, I installed it in the parent installation and it shows up as an available plug in on the plug-ins page for the installation on the subfolder. It's very slick.

You'll have to test your site for how gravity's upgrades work and whether you have to upgrade just once or on each of them.

  4. So, Carl, what you are saying is that even though you're running multi-site on one WordPress instance, you still need a Multi or Dev license to be able to use the plugin for multiple blogs/sites within the network?

  5. Ryan, that is correct.

This is somewhat related so maybe it belongs here. We run a single server with a single universe of users. However, because we are a school, we have two wordpress Multisite instances running. One is an Intranet for teachers, one is public for teachers/parents/students/prospectives etc. Each multisite resolves to a different subdomain / ip address. I wish we had just installed a single multisite, but we didn't. If I purchase the developer license, can I install it on both multisites, same box? These are NOT sub-domain multi-site installs; they're both the subfolder installs.
