Opt-In Options

  1. I am new to Gravity Forms and I am setting up the Mail chimp add on. Can anyone explain to me what the opt in options mean?

A possible option would be "export to mailchimp if (email) (greater than) (enter value)

I don't understand what this means. I tried a google search and a search of this forum to find an explanation but I haven't found anything.

What might a "value" look like? Could I just enter "5"? and what would that do for me?

Would that mean that the number of characters in an email must be more than 5? Why would I want them to be more than 5(or any other value)?

Are there any recommendations for how to set this up? Every tutorial or instruction that I have found for this just says that I can enable the opt-in condition but not what those conditions mean.

    Thanks for any help.

  2. An example of why you would enable the "export to mailchimp" condition would be this scenario, for example:

Let's say you have a form and on your form you have a checkbox field. The checkbox field label says: "Would you like to sign up for our newsletter?" The option for this would be "Yes", which they could choose by selecting the checkbox.

Then in your feed, you can have the MailChimp feed kick in only if that condition is met. So only form submissions from people who have elected to sign up will go to MailChimp.

    Does that help out?

  3. Thanks for replying. I understand what an opt in is, but what I don't understand is what the drop down menus and "add value" field (in relation to the opt in condition check box) mean.

there is a drop down menu that gives me the option of choosing "user name" or "email", and there is another drop down menu that lists these choices: is, is not, greater than, less than, contains, starts with, ends with. After that there is a fiels that says "enter value".

A possible combination might be (user name) (is not) (12).

I don't understand why I might choose that combination, or any other combination.

Here is a screen shot of what I am not understanding.

I would like to have the opt in condition as you described it above but unfortunately (email) (greater than) (8) doesn't seem to bear any relationship to "Would you like to sign up for our newsletter."

I would like to be able to simply set these fields to whatever and then just look at my registration form and then see what comes up and hopefully try to understand it that way, but as you are aware, my forms aren't showing up right now.

    Thanks again.

  4. Erik, I think you are answering your own question here. Exactly - why would you want to only pass to MailChimp if the email field has a greater value than 5 or 8 or 30,000. It just doesn't make sense to do that. If you want that form to automatically log all entries, then it will and you don't need to enable a condition. If you do want the form and feed to meet a certain condition (which you need to define - an example would be what I provided above), then that's what you set.

  5. The Opt-In Condition allows you to configure a condition that must be met in order for the MailChimp integration to be triggered. It is strictly a configuration. By itself it does nothing and it sounds like you haven't added the necessary fields to make it useful.

You would need to add a field to your form that asks the user if they would like to opt in. This could be a Checkbox, Radio Button or Drop Down field depending on how you want it presented.

You would then use the Opt-In Condition option on the MailChimp Feed combined with this field to configure the Feed so that the user is only added if the condition you configure is met.

For example.... say I create a form in the form editor that has 3 fields on it:

    - Name
    - Email
    - Checkbox that says "I would like to subscribe to your mailing list." and set it to selected by default

I would now create a MailChimp Feed for this form. For the Opt-In Condition I would configure it so that the user is added if the checkbox field you added for the user to opt-in was selected.

You would never use the Opt-In Condition with just a Name or Email address field on your form. It's designed to be used with a field you have added to your form that determines if the user should be opted-in or not.

If ALL the form consists of is a Name and Email address field and it's strictly for being added to a mailing list... then the Opt-In Condition is unnecessary. Just use MailChimp's double opt-in which is enabled by default and that is all you would need. MailChimp's double opt-in would confirm their subscription making the form opt-in condition for a form that is strictly for subscribing unnecessary.

  6. Thanks for your help. I think I need to read that again, but that clears some things up. I appreciate how quickly both of you responded to my question. Very helpful.
