It'd be great if, when adding a dropdown menu, you could stipulate whether the item is a choosable item, or a optgroup heading.
IMO this could be done in one of 2 ways:
1) adding a clickable icon (alongside the existing + and - icons) to toggle optgroup or not
2) adding a parameter within the input itself... like by wrapping the text in [square brackets], it becomes a optgroup

I second that. I just encountered a situation where optgroup would be quite handy.
I would LOVE to see this implemented. We have a number of forms with long drop-down lists and it would be great to be able to group options.

Just checking in to see if there has been any work on adding optgroup to dropdowns. It would be extremely helpful for the forms we create.
No work has been done on optgroup. It's a feature we would like to add in a future release, however we have been concentrating on larger features that are more regularly requested. It will make it in eventually. We concentrate on larger features and then work in the smaller features as we can with each release. So it won't be in 1.5 that but that doesn't mean it is forgotten. We plan on refining and enhancing existing functionality as a major focus this year.
The best option at this point is to use jQuery.
