While I am not the person that decided it should function this way, I work for Gravity Forms, and wanted to respond to your message.
Yes, you are correct, when the license expires, all Admin notifications (not user notifications) include that message. Why would we do this? Because people change e-mail addresses, they forget they need to renew, and then they are left with an older version of Gravity Forms which could lead to many more complicated issues down the road.
The worst part is when we have a person e-mail us, saying that their developer installed the software and now it doesn't work. We can't help that person because they don't have their own license, and they ask us to overlook that because their developer has left them in the lurch.
This isn't sneaky, this isn't underhanded. It is requiring developers who run around and install the license everywhere to be held accountable for renewing the license. This is a strong reminder to site owners that didn't know what they were being given information that they might not have otherwise had.
If you don't want this message to appear, but don't want to renew, simply remove the key from the settings, it will then have nothing to query, and it won't send that message in the Admin notification any longer.
Again, I want to stress that this message ONLY goes to the the Admin notification e-mail address and if you chose not to renew, you can remove the API key, and run Gravity Forms unlicensed and this message will not appear.
Lastly, I'm not a founder, or owner, just a long time fan that was recently hired by rocketgenius, and while I understand your frustration and worry, I can also understand the business sense in this decision, as I've fielded hundreds of inquiries about developers not informing clients that the license would need to be renewed to continue to receive updates.
I hope this helps in some way... All my best.
