User Registration to More than one "blog" on Multisite

  1. Hi there!

I've been using GF and the User Registration Addon on Multisite for a while. Most projects are simple 2 sites network to accomodate bilingual sites but...

A few projects are much larger networks including one with 61 sites/blogs. This network is one main org site (artists association) and 50+ artists sites all sharing the same branding as they are under the org's umbrella.

The problem I'm running into is that, some users register to one site (may be the main one or an artist's site) and sometiems want to register to another down the line. But since their email or username is already in use, the User Registration addon rejects the registration. What would be ideal is to give users a notiification that their data is already in use and, do they want to register to the current site too. Is that something possible and/or coming soon?

Thanks and keep on the fantastic work! Didn't have time to beta test 1.6 but can't wait to try it.

  2. It's something we would like to find a solution for. Unfortunately allowing registration on individual sites isn't something WordPress Multi-Site excels at. Primarily due to the fact it shares user tables which is both a plus and a minus. We have yet to find an intuitive way to handle this but it is something we are going to try and find a good solution for.

  3. Thanks for the reply Carl!

What I think would be best is, first on the site admin side, maybe add a setting that would give the choice between keeping the current behavior (deny subscription if user is already registered to another site on the network) and permitting registration to multiple sites.

Secondly, if multiple site registration is enabled, by the network admin then, when a user is trying to register to a new blog and the email is already registered on the network then, display a message saying so and ask if they want to register to current one too by clicking a link.

One other thing might be subject to an admin setting as well (on by default): should the user be asked to provide the existing email's password before they are allowed to register to the new site?

The other use case I can think of is if the user tries to register with an existing username but a new email. Do you think they should be notified of that fact and given a choice between entering a new username OR providing the existing account's email and password as in the case above?
