I have been using the eway plugin for several months. It works great for me and the plugin author is quick to respond to questions. I use it for one off payments and I see that it has just recently been updated to allow for recurring payments also.
It works out of the box but also has some filters for developers to utilise.
You can install it and have a play as it has an option to use the eway sandbox / test environment. There is some doco with the plugin to help get started.
Basically you just install the plugin, put in your eway customer number(or use their sandbox) and add the credit card field to your form. Done!
Beware this doesn't use a shared payment api / hosted page. The customer never leaves your site so you will need the credit card field on your form and a ssl certificate is probably needed. If you have been using PayPal in Australia it is probably the standard version with a hosted payment page - so this may be a new consideration / additional expense.
