Can't edit fields. They open then close immediately.

Had a weird thing occur. Was creating a new form and everything was working fine. Added section breaks continued to edit, then all of the sudden I was unable to edit fields. When I click on them, they open, then they close immediately. Nothing seems to help.

I should note that the only fields I was adding were number fields.

What say ye' incredibly smart form builder dudes? I figure my options are these:

    1. Delete and start over. [did that, no change]
    2. change the theme in case it is interfering [did that, nothing]
    3. post for help at 8pm on a Saturday night and see what other anti social form lovers could help me out [jury still out]
    4. Drink enough Cabernet that I could care less about all of the above [very possibly the best answer].

Ok, it's worse. I managed to get them to open and edit after deleting the form, recreating, adding the base fields, then saving the form before editing the fields. But, when I try to delete a field it deletes a different one than the one I'm editing, and then after saving the form, it saves a number of the fields and renames them all to one items field name......

Woohoo Friday night! Making forms! Yup, I'm bringing sexy back.

  3. Hi Michael,

My first recommendation is to try option 4 several more times. If that does not work, check and see if you're getting a javascript error at any point during the form building process. If so, you're probably experiencing a plugin/theme conflict. In that case, you'll want to:

    • activate the twenty ten theme
    • deactivate all your other plugins besides Gravity Forms
    • attempt to recreate the issue in Gravity Forms

Let me know how it goes. :)

  4. I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately, activating the 2010 theme isn't an option for me since this is a production website I'm adding a form to.

I noticed that this problem occurs after adding a section break to the form. If you try to save the form, close the browser and come back to it, some of the recently added/edited fields have been renamed to other fields nearby, thus creating duplicate entries and losing the ones I added.

I'm on Firefox 4 on OSX, if that matters.

  5. @willc Production website or not the only way to determine plugin or theme conflicts is to deactivate themes and plugins. Form Editor issues are always the result of either file permissions or javascript errors caused by plugins or themes outputting code where they should not be outputting code, in this case in our Form Editor.

The only other option is to use Firebug and browse to the Form Editor and monitor the console for Javascript errors. You would then need to be able to decipher the Javascript errors and determine what other code on your site is causing the error to occur.

If you aren't able to debug Javascript the only solution is to test for theme and plugin conflicts. To do this you can follow the directions here:

    http://www.gravityhelp.com/documentation/page/Testing_for_a_Theme/Plugin_Conflict

We can't prevent theme and plugin conflicts. If another theme or plugin isn't coded properly and outputs Javascript (or CSS) on our admin pages when they should not be doing so, because of the way Javascript executes we can't stop it from causing a problem. It's a fact of life with WordPress and not something that can be prevented if the theme or plugin developer doesn't follow best practices.

  6. Understood. When I have time I'll do some debugging with Firebug.

For now, I was able to avert the issue by saving my edits along the way and *not* clicking "Continue editing" but instead updating the form anyway. It seems that clicking "Continue editing" would cause this issue.

  7. I've got the exact same problem. I've deactivated all other plugins, and switched to the WP default template. No help. Is it time for that Cabernet yet?
    Please help.
