This sounds like either some sort of strange PHP memory issue, or a conflict being caused by a theme or plugin. I actually haven't seen or heard of this specific issue being reported before.
Here is what we would suggest...
1) If your PHP memory settings are relatively low, I would suggest increasing your available PHP memory to a minimum of 64 MB and ideally 128 MB or more. Here is a tutorial on how to do so:

2) Test for plugin and theme conflicts by following the instructions here:

Something on your site, most likely some other code in a theme or plugin, is causing this issue. The steps above should help narrow it down to determine what the source of the issue is.
