I have a drop-down menu, which looks a bit weird when it is clicked on, as it seems to be cut off on the right side.

Once on the site, lcik the arrow at the top right of the screen, then select either 'service' or 'periodical directory' from the 'Recommendation Type', this will bring up aanother drop-down menu, and that is the one that seems to have the problem.

This is because you have the field size set to "Small" for those drop downs. Edit the field, select the Advanced tab and change the size.
No, if you want to customize it you would have to write your own custom CSS class and use that custom CSS class in the Custom Class option in the Advanced tab when editing that field. So you'd have to write your own custom CSS to style it how you want because it's a customization.
