Email Notifications not working

I am using BlueHost and my email notifications are not coming through for new form posts. I am using a temporary URL to build the site and will be pointing the DNS servers to BlueHost once the site is complete. Any thoughts?

  2. This is most likely going to be some sort of web server configuration. If you send us a WordPress admin login for the site via our Contact Us form and reference this post we can take a look and see what is going on. We used to host Gravity Forms on BlueHost, so we know it should work on BlueHost but web server settings can sometimes impact things.

Is there any progress on my issue? I haven't heard back from you

  6. Yes, I had sent you an email replying back. BlueHost is indeed not sending out the emails. This is unusual as we have never experienced this issue with BlueHost, although they are not consistent with how they configure their servers so it's not surprising.

Email issues are always web server configuration related.

The next thing you will need to try is installing and configuring the WP Mail SMTP plugin. This will configure your WordPress site to send email via SMTP. You will need to check with BlueHost to get the proper SMTP settings to configure this plugin.

    You can download it here:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/

The WP Mail SMTP plugin also has a Test Email feature that allows you to test if the SMTP settings are working properly. Once you configure the SMTP settings, use this Test Email functionality to make sure they work. It will return a status and let you know if it sent or not, if it fails it will tell you why. You will need to work with BlueHost to get it sending email properly.

Once WP MAIL SMTP is sending emails, so will Gravity Forms.

I'll try that, I didn't get the email that you had sent. I will work on this and let you know how it goes!

I contacted BlueHost and they said "We do not allow use of SMTP" and sent me a link to this article: https://www.bluehost.com/cgi/help/287

  10. Gravity Forms uses wp_mail which uses sendmail.

I tested the test email functionality of the WP Mail SMTP plugins settings page with the mail set to send via PHP sendmail. It returned an error. Screenshots are below.

Email setup to use PHP sendmail function:

Email doesn't sent, returned an error:

    http://grab.by/9Cw0

    Could not instantiate mail function.
    /usr/sbin/sendmail

So what do I do now?

  12. Contact BlueHost, tell them sendmail isn't working. Show them that screenshot where sending mail with it is failing. It's a web server issue.

I tested your site using WP Mail SMTP set to send mail via SENDMAIL and it returned an error message which means it is working properly. So there isn't anything I can do on my end, the web server needs to work properly.

If they are helpful, consider switching hosts. We haven't had a problem with BlueHost in the past, but it's always a red flag when they are unwilling to help you figure out an issue and use canned responses to explain issues.

WP Mail SMTP is successfully sending emails from BlueHost. The default port for SMTP in the configuration was set to 25. BlueHost's port is 26

  15. If WP Mail SMTP is successfully sending emails, so should your notifications. Are you still having an issue with them?

No issues now! BlueHost does support WP Mail SMTP. I guess it was getting the right tech support person. Thanks for all of your help!

  17. @azsabre Great to hear! BlueHost not supporting SMTP was a bit worrisome. Sometimes it's all about which tech support person you get. We've encountered the same issue with our own host, which is a fantastic host, but not all support agents are as good as others.
