Multisite installation questions

  1. Hi. I have a Gravity Forms developer licence and have installed GF on a WordPress Multisite installation. At present, site owners on my network activate GF on a site-by-site basis. Individual site owners/admins have to upgrade their GF instance when a new GF release becomes available.

Going forward, I would like to network enable Gravity Forms across all existing sites and automatically provision Gravity Forms for all new sites that are created on my network. As a Super Admin, if I "network activate" Gravity Forms in Multisite, will all existing sites be upgraded to support GF and will all new sites created on my network be automatically enhanced with GF? With GF network activated, will the Super Admin be able to upgrade GF across all sites with a single click e.g. from Network Admin > Updates?

One final question, I currently use Ron Rennick's WP Multisite Replicator plugin (wpebooks.com/replicator/) to create new sites on my network. This plugin copies all content, theme and plugin settings from an existing site to create a new site. What issues should I be aware of if I replicate an existing site that uses Gravity Forms?

    Thank you.

  2. Gravity Forms should be able to be Network Activated right now. It shouldn't have to be activated on a site by site basis. You can configure it to be Network Activated when managing plugins as the Super Admin.

In the latest version of Gravity Forms, when used in a Multi-Site environment only the Super Admin should see the upgrade notices. So only the Super Admin should be able to execute software updates. Other things are also limited to Super Admin only such as the Add-On manager to browse and install Add-Ons.

So yes, the Super Admin can upgrade Gravity Forms across all sites simply by upgrading in one location. The plugin files are shared across all sites, that is how Multi-Site handles plugins.

We have heard of issues with plugins that replicate site content, however I can't tell you if the Rennick's solution has this problem as it isn't one we have encountered an issue with. The issues related to this are when the replicator replicates data in the wp_options table that should NOT be replicated. IF you do encounter an issue with their plugin, just let us know and i'd be glad to get in touch with Ron or Andrea and help them correct the plugin so it doesn't happen.

  3. I have this working well in a multi site install. You can add your license and captcha code in your wp config file so it gets replicated and yo don't have to enter it every time a new blog is create... Not sure about the newest GF but this is what I had to do until altering the wp config file..

I too use a blog replicator template from here called New Blog Templates
    http://bit.ly/wpmumultisite

Had to check some tables in the advanced settings to include the gf tables and all is good

    captcha
    http://www.gravityhelp.com/forums/topic/global-recaptcha-keys-on-multi-site

    license
    define(‘GF_LICENSE_KEY’,'YOUR_KEY_GOES_HERE’);

  4. @CarlHancock - cheers, I'll go ahead and network activate and report any problems/conflicts (if any) with the WP Multisite Replicator plugin.

@scott74 - thanks for the New Blogs template plugin heads-up. If I strike any problems with WP Multisite Replicator it's good to know there's an alternative.

    Thanks everyone

  5. I just had a quick flick through the WP Multisite Replicator forums for any known issues with Gravity Forms and the best I could come up with was the thread http://wpebooks.com/support/general/forum/topic/wp-multisite-replicator/.

Ron's response leaves me a little cautious. Is a unique GF registration/activation setting saved to each sites options table? If so, I'm guessing this would get copied across exactly given the wording of Ron's thread response.

    I currently have my GF registration key for my multisite defined in wp-config.php via define("GF_LICENSE_KEY", "XXXXXXX");

Sorry to speculate, I just don't want to go network activating Gravity Forms and strike a bunch of problems due to me using a replication plugin for new site creation.

Any initial thoughts much appreciated before I hit Ron up with similar questions.

    Thanks

  7. Really appreciated, cheers Scott. I haven't used any of the plugins from the guys at WPMU Dev so great to get a first hand recommendation. Having a replication plugin work nicely with Gravity Forms is essential to my current project. You wouldn't by any chance have any experience using the New Blogs Template plugin with Gravity Forms own User Registration Add On?

What I hope to finally achieve is a custom registration process whereby a user signs up to my network, makes a Paypal payment and afterwhich a new site is created complete with boilerplate posts/content (via the replication plugin) and standard Gravity Forms functionality.

Many thanks again for your time and recommendations/suggestions.

    Cheers

  8. It will work fine becuse it should replicate everything.. plugin settings post, pages, custom post types ect... The way they register should not matter... I blog templat I am using now , you can create multiple templates and then select the template you want to when creating the new site from the drop down..

I build fanpages with wordpress so I have templates to speed things up... A default GF form... Pages Usually 5 with no content plugin settings ect.... If I do one for realestate then that template will have the real estate plugins appear enabled with all my yelp, zillow api's ect..

i then brand the backend to get rid of everything wordpress with another plugin made for branding multisite.... Check out the wp-amin login screen to give you an idea.. comes complete with role manager ect... for your differnet levels of membership for hiding menu items :)

  9. Hi, Carl--

Hmm, while logged in as the superadmin of 2 different WP multisite installations (3.1 and 3.3), I am only able to register and install GF 1.6.2.1.1 on a site-by-site basis. I can't register it from the network admin plug-ins page (it gives me the "You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page" error page); and if I attempt to network install the plug-in, it won't show up under installed plug-ins for the individual sites.

The only way I'm able to get it to work on my sites in MS at all is to network deactivate the plugin, then activate GF under the individual sites, then register it on the individual sites.

    Not ideal.

Please let me know if there is some workaround or documentation I've missed to bypass the buggy error issue to get network activation working?

    Many thanks,
    Devra

I am having the same issue as Webspinster. I have a business license, so I am wondering if this is the problem. Any thoughts? At this time, I can't use the plug-in for my multisite.

Note: I hard coded the registration key into both the plugin itself and the wp-config.php file. No luck yet.

Still having the same issues, no responses yet. Any thoughts on why I can't network activate?

  12. I'm also having this problem. I did undo the network activate and then registered the plugin in the individual website, however now I cannot upgrade the plugin!

  13. Similar to the last three posters, after doing a network activate, I click the Register link to add my license key and it tells me I don't have sufficient permissions.

    WP 3.3.1 multisite, GF 1.6.3.2.1

  14. The issue is related to WordPress Multi-Site, user permissions and how the Network Admin Dashboard behaves differently from the individual site dashboards.

Don't go to the Register link via the Network Admin. Go to the Settings page of Gravity Forms via the Dashboard of one of the sites in your multi-site network and NOT from the Network Admin or the Network Plugin Activation page itself.

You enter your license key on the Settings page and you can access that from any site on the multi-site install.
