Pagely and Gravity Forms

  1. Hi,

I have Gravity Forms, personal edition. I use page.ly as my hosting service. The Admin area slows down significantly (from about a 1 second response time, to about a 5 second response time) when Gravity Forms is enabled.

    I am running version 1.6.3.2.1
And, I have enabled "No Conflict Mode".

Page.ly suggested that you may have an updated version. I also would appreciate any other advice.

    Thank you.

  2. Sounds like you may have a PHP memory issue. Usually that's the case. It may not be Gravity Forms itself, but the combination of Gravity Forms with other plugins you're running. Usually Page.ly has this accounted for but you might try toggling off some of your other plugins and see if there is an improvement. If so, you may want to discuss this with your host to see if you have enough memory allotted.

Also, the latest version would be available via automatic upgrade (show up in your admin) if you have entered your key in the form settings. You can always get the latest version as well from the downloads page linked in the sidebar to the right -->

  3. The automatic upgrade does not work for me. It always says "up-to-date" but if I check the download link in the sidebar, I find new downloads. I mention this, because, perhaps it is related? I do not mind updating manually.

    Page.ly recommended contacting you.

I have used the P3 performance profiler in several configurations. The slowdown only appears when Gravity Forms is in use. The slowdown continues to appear if Gravity Forms even with most plugins disabled (Page.ly requires some plugins, like W3TC, login lockdown, etc, to always be enabled). P3 Performance is pointing to Gravity Forms, too.

  4. This is a Page.ly infrastructure problem related to FireHost, the data center that Page.ly as well as Gravity Forms uses.

Gravity Forms is hosted on FireHost's older platform.

Page.ly migrated to FireHost's new platform.

The two platforms do not communicate with each other very well and have poor performance between interaction between the two platforms. They didn't discover this until after they had fully committed to the hardware they selected for the new platform.

So the issue is Page.ly's site cannot communicate efficiently with Gravity Forms site. This impacts a variety of things and can cause slowdowns in the admin because Gravity Forms is trying to communicate with the update server... but the performance is very slow it's receiving a response but very slowly.

FireHost created a temporary connection between the two, but it's still not a big pipe so depending on the time of day, etc. it can cause slowdowns in the admin.

Ultimately this is a FireHost issue. Page.ly made the decision to jump to their new infrastructure immediately, we chose to wait and see how it went before we would migrate. Because we aren't on the same infrastructure... this issue occurs.

It's an issue that only impacts some Page.ly customers, it's not an issue other users are experiencing.

We will be working with FireHost to migrate our server to their new infrastructure within the next week or so. They've assured us is an easy migration so i'll be getting in touch with them in the next day or so to get the wheels turning on it.

As soon as we migrate to their new infrastructure, this issue will cease and automatic updates, etc. will work correctly.

I'm not sure why Page.ly had said a plugin update will correct this issue. Joshua Strebel at Page.ly is well aware of what the cause of the problem is and should have been able to explain to you the situation. I'm assuming one of their other support team members responded to you and he most likely wasn't aware of the issue.

  5. Ah Ha! Then there is a simple solution!

***Remove the Gravity Forms License Key.***

Things seem speedier. I can check for updates manually. Thanks so much for the clear explanation.

  6. I've been working on building a Gravity Form on a site hosted on Page.ly and the crazy slowness was driving me nuts. Removing the Gravity Forms License Key fixed it and now the form edit screen is responding normally.

    Thanks for the explanation, Carl!

    Greetings,

Do you have an update on your timing for the move? I just installed GF on Page.ly and am having the same issue as reported.

    Thanks in advance

This has also been plaguing one of my clients. Would love to know when you plan to do the move.

    Thanks!

UPDATE: I emailed with Page.ly to ask if they could encourage Firehost to increase the connection with you guys and/or to help migrate faster. They said they are working on it and to use an alternative form in the meantime. I really don't want to, but might have to -- definitely would want to know when the migration happens so we can switch back.

  9. We will know more on a resolution to this issue later this week. I will be discussing it with FireHost and they will be scheduling our migration to the new platform.

As explained above, this is a unique issue that is not caused by anything Gravity Forms or page.ly is doing wrong... it's a hosting infrastructure issue caused by FireHost who we both use as our hosting infrastructure.
