Removing HTML code in order receipt

I've created a simple check box form to pick between basketball & baseball. When the order receipt is sent to the user and the admin, I get html code included in the item line:

Select your subscriptions: <ul class='bulleted'><li>Basketball ($20.00)</li></ul>

I've searched the forum, but have not been able to resolve the issue.
