User activation in v 1.5 beta 1

  1. I read the announcement for beta 1 of v 1.5 and support for creating the user account only after a user clicks on an activation email. That's a great feature. If I opt to create a site on a network when a user registers, does site creation wait until the activation email is clicked?

  2. John, I don't know the answer to that question so I flagged it for the developers. Have you already tested it out and found the answer to your question?

  3. I have tested it, or at least tried to test it.

In ver 1.4, when adding a new user registration feed, there is a block labeled "Network Options" with a checkbox to provide the ability to create a new site when a user registers. In 1.5 beta1, there are no network options, so it doesn't appear that there's a way to create a site (functionality that was in 1.4 that now can't be accessed). So I can't really test whether the site creation step won't happen until user activation.

I am testing this on my bleeding edge install of WP on a network of subdomains where I allow users and sites to be registered, which are the same settings on another network running the user registration addon ver 1.4, where I can register a new site. So if that capability is supposed to be working, it doesn't appear to be on WP 3.5.

  5. Hello John,
This seems to be working well on WP 3.4.2. The decision to add the Network Options or not is based on the built-in WP function is_multisite(), so the new version of WP might still have an issue with that functionality. WP 3.5 still has ways to go before getting stable, so we will wait a little more before we start digging into problems like these. If you have an environment where you can test this out with the current WP install, that would be helpful.

  6. Alex - Thanks for the followup. I have another test environment running 3.4.2, so I'll install it there and let you know how it works.

  7. I did more testing on both 3.4.2 and 3.5, and everything seems to work as expected, where the site is only created after activation, which is perfect.

For my previous observation, chalk it up to not thinking clearly. In order for the "Network Options" to be visible, one must be using the user registration addon on the MAIN site of a network, which makes perfect sense. In my original test, I quickly selected a test site where I had GF forms activated, and that was a subsite on the network - so no network options appeared. The nice thing about this is that a site admin can use the user registration addon safely - ie, never see the create site options.

Once I did more careful testing, the beta works great. The new features are big improvements.
