User notification disappeared last nite...

  1. I have a form, with 5 pages and roughly 40 fields. I've also set up user notifications using conditional shortcodes - the input of each field will determine the content of the user notification message.

Last nite I finished the first two pages (a fair amount of work). This morning I woke up to find all of the conditional shortcodes I created for the user notification message gone. (Talk about a WTF moment!) Has anyone ever experienced that?

Another unusual experience last night - while testing the user notifications, they just stopped being sent after 30 or so submissions of the form. I'm with dreamhost so my first thought was they flagged that domain as possibly sending spam.

Both very strange occurrences , my hopes are that someone else has experience the same and can shed some light on what happened.

  2. I've never had that experience losing the shortcodes in the notification. Could be a theme or plugin conflict, or could have been server resources if it was a large form. It could also be a security restriction on the server with mod_security or suhosin. If that is the case, you will lose them every time.

Regarding notifications, you can try using the WP Mail SMTP plugin to get more reliable email notification delivery. Some hosts do exactly as you describe, throttling mail being sent by scripts.

  3. The weird gets weirder :/

I installed the plugin you suggested, configured it to use gmail as the smtp server, added my username, password, clicked save settings, and then sent a test message.

Just a few minutes later I received a notice from Google stating that someone from China tried to use an application to access my gmail account and that I should change my password immediately.

Coincidence? I don't know but it was enough for me to uninstall the plugin and look for another way to make things work.

  4. I understand your concern with the plugin.

What other solutions have you come up with for resolving your problem?

  5. Update: the conditional shortcodes did not disappear last night which is great. The thought of them randomly disappearing is unsettling so I periodically copy/paste my work to google docs so i don't lose everything if they vanish again.

Regarding email limitations - Dreamhost does limit the amount of emails that can be sent by a script, not sure of the threshold. As a half-cocked work around, I disable notifications going to administrators. In doing so, I reduced the number of emails being sent by 50% and increased the number of times I can test the notification by double. Not perfect but it's better than before.

    Real bummer regarding the plugin...

Thanks for the input and help!

  6. Your situation is unique and I've never heard of either of your issues (shortcodes disappearing, Google/China) occurring before. If you continue to have trouble, please let us know. Thanks.

  7. I know this topic is old, but I, too, am having an issue with my notifications going missing. It's happened twice now. Good thing I have a copy of the text, but, yes, twice now my notifications have disappeared. I'm hosted at WPengine.

  8. I've never seen that happen before. Can you explain how we can recreate the problem, or is it that you have not done anything, and all of the sudden the notification is empty?

  9. I wish I could tell you how to reproduce the problem... But it seems somewhat random. I know I leave the page and come back, sometimes the content I entered in the notification fields to the user are what seem to disappear, not to the admin, from what I can tell.

Now, what I will say, I am running 3.4.2... Right. But there's reasons I've not upgraded yet, primarily I'm waiting for the first patch before I go to 3.5.x.

But based on the OPs message, it appears this was an issue in 3.4.x as well.

I can provide access if necessary
