Why do we need to translate country names for gravityform?

  1. I checked gravityforms translation but there is lots of things that can use default wordpress language.. like country names? why dont we use default wordpress country names in gravityforms?

  2. The decision to implement our own country list was made at the very beginning of development 2 1/2 years ago so I can't give you an answer on this as I honestly can't remember.

There is a lot to WordPress and while we know a lot about it, it's impossible to know everything. There are always hidden goodies that you run across that you realize will make your life easier.

If there are any things such as this that you are aware of that WordPress can provide and you wanted to give us suggestions, we'd be glad to take a look at them and see if they are things that can be used to streamline things.

  3. Maybe we can include month, day names in this list too. Example: __("Sunday","gravityforms"),__("Monday","gravityforms"), etc in form_detail.php:1514

Others are short and not problem that much.. like:
    _e("Help", "gravityhelp") in form_detail.php:1727 and gravityforms.php:540

problem is country list.. seriously i cant translate those ^^

  4. The only ones we could do would be the generic lists such as country, days, etc. if there is functionality in WordPress that can already return this information the way we need it.

However, we also have to be careful not to rely on WordPress core too much because if they change something we are using this way, we have no control over it.

  6. I strongly disagree here with the original post author!

Countries need to be translateable!! Pulling the list from WP languages does not help as these are only for backend purposes to adjust time zones or such....

In Gravity this matters highly on the frontend! For example take "Austria" - in German it's "Österreich" - no German-speaking user would ever expect that to be "Austria" in the country list. So this could become a major-trouble if this wasn't translateable correctly.

It's also very important to have ONE UNIFIED textdomain for the plugin and not 200 hundred strings with no textdomain at all. Will cause many issues also for multilingual sites.

    -Thanx, Dave :)
