Is there a way to automatically login the user and re-direct them to a page of my choosing after they click register? I noticed a few threads about this but haven't had any success implementing their ideas.

There are issues with being able to automatically log the user in due to how WordPress works and how things are executed. So that is why it has not been added as a built in feature. David (our developer who works on the User Registration Add-On) posted a code snippet and discusses how to do this as a customization here:
