Captcha writing thousands of files

  1. I'm not sure how the "really simple captcha" plugin is supposed to work.. but in my instance, it's writing about 20,000 files to the following folder every week...

    wp-content\uploads\gravity_forms\captcha-12345678asdfghjk345678ertyu567

Maybe it's supposed to be deleting previously written files?

My systems guy says that's the reason for poor site performance.. of course I don't believe him.

    Any ideas?

  2. Depending on the performance issue you're having, I don't think having 20,000 files (or more) in a folder is going to slow the performance down. Having to scan through all those files and find the necessary one would take a little time, but that should not cause noticeable performance problems.

Since Really Simple Captcha is a 3rd party plugin, I would check their support. I did find this topic at the wordpress.org forums:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-really-simple-captcha-wpfc7_captcha-folder-is-flooded-with-png

It suggests checking the permissions, and manually deleting the old files. It also had some additional questions about how old the files were, and a modification to the plugin files, which I would not recommend.

Please let us know if you need more help. The cleanup should be done by the RSC plugin, not Gravity Forms.
