I have just put my first form on to my site and am puzzled, have not seen this before, could someone take a look at give me a clue as to why my form is very narrow and now displaying correctly.

sorted, had some lines in my css relating to another form thats now getting converted to a gravityforms form.

CSS inheritance was going to be the cause as you discovered. This happens when CSS is applied to elements too broadly and because of how CSS inheritance works it gets applied to Gravity Forms elements. We can't do anything to prevent this from happening due to how CSS works. Glad to hear you figured it out.
