Many apps you hook Gravity Forms to require a 2-character state abbreviation and won't take a long state name. There should be a checkbox in the Gravity Forms State field to write the 2-character code into the database, rather than the long name.

If Gravity Forms is used to send info to most any payment Gateway, such as Authorize.net or PayPal, the abbreviation is required. Of course you can whack on a conversion routine with a hook, but this is so commonly needed it should be in core code.
I agree and we are going to look into adding this. It might even make it in the next release, which was not planned as a feature release, although no promises. Either way it will be added to a future release.
